PURPOSE:To apply large driving voltage regardless of the breakdown of polarization structure by applying driving voltage in the direction equal to the direction of polarization of a ceramic layer positioned on one side of a center electrode in an even layer of ceramic layers to the ceramic layer, positively expanding and contracting the ceramic layer and preventing the application of driving voltage to a ceramic layer on the other side. CONSTITUTION:A ceramic sintered body is demarcated into ceramic layers 11-14 of four layers by internal electrodes 15-17 and outer surface electrodes 18, 19. When + potential from a terminal 23 is applied to the internal electrode 15 side constituting a second electrode group and - potential from a terminal 24 is applied to the internal electrode 17 organizing a third electrode group, the ceramic layers 11, 12 are extended in the direction of thickness. However, driving voltage is not applied to the ceramic layers 13, 14 positioned on both sides of the internal electrode 17 connected at -potential. Consequently, the ceramic layers 11, 12 are shrunk in the direction of length thereof and elongated in the direction of thickness thereof, and ceramic layer 13, 14 themselves are not expanded and contracted, thus displacing the whole displacement element to a recessed shape. Accordingly, driving voltage is not applied in the direction that polarization structure is broken, thus acquiring the large quantity of displacement by applying large driving voltage. |
