On an appliance with a pair of press rollers and a downstream compression chamber, the press-roller nip is sealed off by means of two pressure discs. To avoid generating any air gap between the end faces of the press rollers and the pressure disc, the pressure disc is pressed against the end faces of the press rollers. This pressure is to be regulated, during pressing, in dependence on a flexion, which is to be measured, of a carrier of the pressure disc. <IMAGE>
