The present invention relates to a method allowing the quantity of residual gases contained in a combustion chamber of a four-stroke internal-combustion engine to be reduced. The invention also relates to the combustion chamber itself, this being defined by a cylinder, a main piston and a cylinder head. The combustion chamber according to the present invention comprises an auxiliary piston (5) sliding in an auxiliary cylinder (6) and suitable means (10, 11) of controlling the stroke of the said auxiliary piston (5) so as to minimise the volume of the said combustion chamber (4) when the main piston (2) is more or less at exhaust top dead centre and to maximise this volume when the piston is at compression top dead centre.
