PURPOSE:To produce a porous carbon plate with a sharp pore diameter distribution and a high mechanical strength at a low cost and easily, by heating under pressure to form a mat-form carbon fiber impregnated with a binder and a pore-forming agent, and after a hardening process, carbonizing or further graphitizing it. CONSTITUTION:To 100 wt part of a binder and 50 to 200 wt part of a pore- forming agent, 70 % or more of whose particle diameters are between 5 and 50mum, 100 to 800 wt part of a solvent which does not dissolve the pore-forming agent is added, churned, and mixed to make a matrix slurry. Then, the slurry is impregnated evenly to a specfic size of carbon fiber mats, and dried to form impregnated carbon fiber mats. After necessary sheets of the impregnated carbon fiber mats are laminated to make the object thickness of the product, they are heated under pressure to form in a metal mould. The products removed from the metal mould are carbonized in an inert gas atmosphere, baked up if necessary, and processed to form up the elctrode base plate for a fuel cell. |
