The process consists of (a) passing enzyme digestion extract from animal tissues, consisting of lungs, trachea and cartilage from cattle, pigs and sheep, through separate selective ultra-filtration membranes to remove nucleic acids, high mol. wt. polymers (peptides, amino acids and muco-polysaccharides) and salts, and obtain glycosamino-glycans in liquid phase; (b) treating the soln. with quat. ammonium cations in butanol phase to form complexes; (c) purifying the complex soln.; and (d) treating the soln. with NaCl to isolate the glycomamino-glycans in solid phase. The ultra-filtration membranes are of mol. wt. between 1000,000 D and 3000 D.
