A method of machining articles, e.g. machine components, from metal plate or the like comprises temporarily bonding the plate to a backing sheet by means of adhesive, acting on the plate with a machine tool carrying out at least one machining operation resulting in complete penetration of the metal plate and partial penetration of the backing sheet. The articles are then separated from the backing sheet.
