Di- and tripeptides with N-terminal phosphinothricin of the formula in which phosphinothricin is linked to 1 or 2 molecules of, preferably, natural amino acids are effective pre- and post-emergence herbicides. The compounds are obtained by reacting phosphinothricin, which is protected on the amino group, with amino acids or dipeptides which are esterified on the terminal carboxyl group in the presence of a base and of a carbodiimide and, where appropriate, subsequently eliminating the protective groups.
