摘要 PURPOSE:To stabilize the orientation of liquid crystal molecules at a large part of a display part and to obtain a liquid crystal light quantity modulating element excellent in contrast by forming electrode patterns near a display forming part by display electrode part and an outer peripheral electrode part having a fixed gap with the display electrode part. CONSTITUTION:Electrode patterns are formed on the opposite surfaces of a pair of transparent electrode substrates 4, 7 and liquid crystal is sealed into the space between the substrates 4, 7. The electrode patterns near the display forming part out of the electrode patterns is formed by a display electrode parts 3 and outer peripheral electrode parts 6 formed so as to surround the electrode parts 3 with a fixed gap 5. When voltage is impressed, the distribution of electric line of force is uniformed on the display electrode part 3 including the peripheral part of the electrode part 3 and the distortion of electric line of force is generated in the electrode part 6. Consequently, torque applied to the liquid crystal molecules is uniformed on the whole surface of the electrode part 3 an unsufficient tilt area or a tilt reversed area does not exist on the peripheral part of the electrode part 3. Consequently, the element stabilized in orientation and improved in contrast can be obtained.
