PURPOSE:To produce carbon fibers having excellent strength and elongation and high qualities, by washing a tow of pitch fibers to remove the excess of a fiber-collecting agent adhering thereto before the infusibilization treatment of the tow. CONSTITUTION:Pitch fibers produced by melt-spinning a pitch are collected with a collecting agent and the formed tow is subjected to an infusibilization treatment, a carbonization treatment and, if necessary, a graphitization treatment to obtain a pitch carbon fiber. In the above process, the tow produced by collecting the pitch fibers is brought into contact with a washing liquid to wash the surface. When an organic chemical is used as the washing liquid, the organic chemical is preferably a 1-4C aliphatic alcohol, a 3-6C alicyclic alcohol or a 3-6C ketone.
