PURPOSE:To produce the titled pliable and homogeneous fibers, by collecting pitch fibers produced by melt-spinning a spinning-grade pitch in a gaseous phase in the presence of a fiber-collecting agent, rapidly drying the produced wet tow to reduce the adhering liquid to a specific level, storing and then subjecting the tow to an infusibilization treatment, a carbonization treatment and a graphitization treatment. CONSTITUTION:Pitch fibers produced by melt-spinning a spinning-grade pitch in a gaseous phase are collected in the presence of a collecting agent to form a wet pitch fiber tow, which is then rapidly dried to reduce the adhering liquid to an amount of <=5wt% and is temporarily stored. Subsequently, the stored tow is subjected to an infusibilization treatment, a carbonization treatment and, if necessary, a graphitization treatment to provide the objective carbon fibers. It is preferable that the wet pitch fiber tow contains 10-200wt% liquid and the drying time is <=5hr.
