PURPOSE:To obtain a perpendicular magnetic anisotropic film having high S/N even at <=100 deg.C substrate temp. by forming a magnetic layer consisting of Co, Cr, Ni, P and trace impurities on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer consisting of Co, Cr, Ni, P and trace impurities is formed on the substrate. A thin film type magnetic recording medium for vertical recording having the high S/N even in a short wavelength region is thereby obtd. even if a substrate such as polyethylene terephthalate film having poor heat resistance is obtd. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is not enough and the vertical recording is not possible if the amt. of the Cr to be added is below 7wt%. The output in the short wavelength region obtainable in such a case is extremely low. Ms is too small and the output is extremely low if the amt. of the Cr to be added exceeds 26wt%. The amt. of the Cr to be added is, therefore, required to be maintained within a 7-26wt% range.
