PURPOSE:To permit a sufficient amount of oil to be obtained for actuating a power steering gear, by placing an engine in a fast idle condition if an accelerator pedal is detected to be opened when a transmission is placed in a neutral position with an engine load being removed during steering. CONSTITUTION:An electronic control unit 5 inputs a signal SS from a car speed sensor 2b, signal HS from a steering angle sensor 8, signal NS from a neutral switch 2a and a signal AS from an accelerator sensor 7a, and an engine 1, when its load is removed with a transmission 2 in a neutral position during steering, is placed in a fast idle condition, in which supply fuel is increased more than that in the normal idle condition, if opening of an accelerator pedal 7 is detected in a preset car speed or more. Accordingly, an oil amount enough for sufficiently actuating a power steering gear is obtained by fully actuating a power steering pump 6. In this way, the engine, which is placed in the fast idle condition only when a delivery oil amount from the pump is really necessary, enables fuel consumption to be reduced.
