PURPOSE:To have optimum knocking control in accordance with the air-to-fuel ratio by changing at least either of the amount of angle delay for ignition timing and the speed to advance the ignition timing in response to change in the air-to-fuel ratio controlled by an air-to-fuel ratio control means. CONSTITUTION:When an engine is in operation, a control circuit 45 calculates the fundamental fuel injection time on the basis of output from an air flow meter 10 and a revolving angle sensor 48, followed by correction with output of a suction gas temp. sensor 12, a water temp. sensor 38, etc. and the time of fuel injection is represented by tau. When the output of an exhaust gas temp. sensor 50 exceeds a certain value, control is so made that the air-to-fuel ratio becomes richer than the output air-to-fuel ratio. Output of a knocking sensor 36 serves judgement whether knocking has occurred. Eventual generation of knocking shall delay the ignition timing, while no generation of knockings advance the same, wherein the amount of angle delay in the ignition timing and/or the speed of angle advance is changed according to the change in the air-to-fuel ratio.
