PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for hypotensor, by extracting an aqueous solution of crude DL-2-amino-3-(3,4- dimethoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropionitrile with an organic solvent and transferring the substance to an aqueous solution of mineral acid. CONSTITUTION:DL-2-Amino-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropionitrile is extracted from an aqueous solution containing crude DL-2-amino-3-(3,4- dimethoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropionitrile with an organic solvent, the extracted solution is treated with an aqueous solution of mineral acid and the aimed compound is transferred to an aqueous solution of mineral acid to give purified DL-2-amino-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropionotrile. USE:An important raw material as an intermediate for L-methyldopa, a hypotensor.
