A trace is made on a print medium by controlling the relative displacement between a print head and the print medium on the basis of input data representing a succession of line segments defining the trace to be produced. The input data are processed at 31 in order to derive modified input data which are representative of the said line segments modified by inserting curvilinear connecting parts B'B'' between successive line segments AB-BC, BC-CD and the relative displacement between the head and the print medium is controlled by 32, 34, 35 by means of the said modified input data so as to obtain a trace reproducing the modified line segments connected by the said curvilinear parts, in such a way that, all along the trace obtained, the orientation of the tangent to the trace exhibits no discontinuity. <IMAGE>
