PURPOSE:To prevent thrusting of an electrode when the end face positions of an electrode and a workpiece are detected, by a method wherein a follow-up delay amount available when contact between the electrode and the workpiece is detected is outputted in a reverse direction. CONSTITUTION:A d.c. voltage is applied on an electrode 16 and a workpiece 10, and the voltage is inputted as a contact detecting signal to a position control processing part 42. A shaft output outputted from the position control processing part 42 is outputted to motors 24, 26, 28, and 30 for driving shafts X, Y, Z, and C through an amplifier 43, and an actual movement amount is fed back as a position signal from a position detector 40 to the position processing device 42. The position control processing part 42 outputs a follow-up delay of the electrode 16, being available when contact between the electrode 16 and the workpiece 10 is detected, in a direction reverse to the moving direction of the electrode 16 to prevent thrusting of the electrode 16.
