PURPOSE:To manufacture a friction roller having high and long-term friction force and high repulsion elasticity by press-fitting a roller core having grooves on its outer peripheral surface in the transversal direction to the axis into a vulcanized hollow rubber-like elastic cylinder and by grinding the outer peripheral surface of the rubber-like elastic cylinder. CONSTITUTION:A roller core 1 having square grooves 2 on the outer peripheral surface in the transversal direction to the axis is integrally press-fitted into a vulcanized hollow rubber-like elastic cylinder 3. In the next step, the outer peripheral surface of the elastic cylinder 3 is ground with the inside surface of the elastic cylinder 3 relieved into the grooves 2 being caused by the pressure of the grinding stone of a grinder 4 while in grinding. In the next step, when the pressure of the grinding stone is eliminated, the inside faces of the rubber of the elastic cylinder 3 relieved into the grooves are repulsed and restored to the original position. As a result, smooth recesses and projections are formed transversally to the axial direction on the outer peripheral surface of the roller so that a friction roller having high friction force and allowing to maintain friction force constant for a long time can be manufactured.
