PURPOSE:To obtain the titled opal glass emitting dark red - brown reflected and scattered light and bluish green transmission light and suitable for ornament, etc., by mixing a basic opal glass having a specific composition with a red color-developing agent and a color-development assistant and reheating the obtained basic glass to effect the color development. CONSTITUTION:(A) A basic opal glass composition consisting of 30-60wt% silicic acid, 5-20wt% Al, 2.5-25wt% B2O3, 0.1-5wt% phosphoric acid, 10-25wt% alkaline earth metal oxide and 2-10wt% alkali metal oxide is mixed with (B) a red color-developing agent consisting of 0.002-0.02wt% gold and (C) a color-development assistant consisting of 0.1-2wt% cerium oxide and 0.1-2wt% MnO2. The mixture is melted at 1,200-1,500 deg.C and cooled to obtain a basic glass. The objective opal glass can be produced by reheating the basic glass at 600-1,000 deg.C to effect the color-development.
