PURPOSE:A microorganism in Corynebacterium, capable of oxidizing glycols, is utilized to enable high efficient production of alpha-hydroxyacid, which is used as an intermediate for a variety of organic syntheses, from the corresponding glycol. CONSTITUTION:A glycol of formula I (X1, X2 are hydrogen atom, hydroxyl, nitro, alkyl; n is integer of 0-4) is treated with the cell bodies or an extract therefrom of a microorganism in Corynebacterium, capable of oxidizing the glycol, such as Corynebacterium hoagii-ATCC 7005 strain, at a pH of 3-11, preferably 5-10, at 10-60 deg.C, preferably 20-50 deg.C to give the alpha-hydroxyacid of formula II (X1, X2, n are defined as above-described). |
