PURPOSE:A glass melting furnace of open crucible kiln wherein a combustion gas evolved from an exhaust nozzle set at the ceiling part of the inner wall of the kiln is made into flame, dropped along the wall face, reaches a suction hole set at the bottom and operation can be carried out without feeling heat from a working window. CONSTITUTION:Spiral diffusion flame of a combustion gas from an exhaust nozzle 12A set at a ceiling part 111A spreads as flat flame to the ceiling part. In an open crucible 20A, the heat directly heats raw material glass 30A in the crucible, encircles the outer peripheral wall along an inner wall 11A of a kiln and sucked in a suction hole 13A right under the crucible. Consequently, since the combustion gas drops as a wall face flow uniformly and without resistance, blowoff of the combustion gas can be prevented only by making the internal pressure of the furnace into negative pressure at the position of a working window 16A set at the middle and an operator is not directly exposed to radiation heat from the high-temperature combustion flame nor feels heat. Neither life of the crucible and the kiln is shortened nor energetic loss is caused by extreme temperature decrease resulting from a large amount of cold air sucked from the working window.
