PURPOSE:To enable multi-level modulation of molten dot area with high resolution, by simultaneously applying energy to a plurality of adjacent heat generating element to cause them to generate heat, and melting an ink under interference of the heats generated by the elements. CONSTITUTION:With the lapse of time under the condition where two adjacent heat generating element 3a, 3b are caused to generate heat by supplying them with such energy as not to melt an ink of an ink layer 5, the heats generated by the elements 3a, 3b interfere with each other, so that discribution curves A, B for a melting temperature are combined to be a distribution curve C having a peak at a middle part between the elements 3a, 3b, resulting in that the ink of the ink layer 5 can be melted at a middle point (c). By this, a dot is printed at the middle position between the elements 3a, 3b. Accordingly, printing can be performed with a pitch finer than the pitch of the heat generating elements, a higher resolution can be obtained with an inexpensive head construction, and multi-level modulation of molten dot area can be performed. |
