A rasping unit is specified, especially for beets, with frame 21 and rotating rasping drum 11. Furthermore, there is a retaining element 23, which can swivel about a suspension point 22 on the frame. A pressure spring 25 works to close the gap between the rasping drum 11 and the retaining element 23. The rasping unit is laid out so that stones can pass through without damaging the unit. This is achieved in that one end of the pressure spring 25 is attached pivotably the frame 21, while its other end works on to a point 24 on the retaining element 23 such that the momentum exerted by the spring to close the gap between retaining element 23 and rasping drum 11 diminishes as the gap increases. In the case of especially large stones, the retaining element 23 can swivel into a position where it is held at a distance from the rasping drum 11 until the rasping unit is cleared once again by manual intervention.
