PURPOSE:To eliminate a tab during pretreatment for paper joint to aim at enhancing the working efficiency and at reducing the cost, by winding off the leading end of wound-up paper so that the other end of an adhesive tape is applied to the outer surface of the wound-up tape. CONSTITUTION:A table plate 5 is slightly slide after completion of both application of an adhesive tape 18 and formation of closed cut edges, so that the leading end of wound-up paper 13 is wound off while the outer surface of the paper 13 is held by a wound-up paper pressing device 6, and therefore, the other end of the bisurface adhesive tape 18 in the tapered end section thereof is applied on the outer surface of the wound-up paper 13 so that the treatment of the leading end of the wound-up paper 13 is completed. The wound-up paper 13 which has been subjected to the pretreatment for paper joint is rotated at a speed equal to the paper speed of wound-up paper fed to a rotary press, and the leading end of the new wound-up paper 13 is pressed onto the wound-up paper 13 on use so that both are bonded and connected with each other by the paper joint adhesive layer 18' while the applied tapered end of the adhesive tape 18 is cut apart along the closed cut edges 20, thereby the leading end of the new wound-up paper 13 is continuously fed into the rotary press.
