The turret head has a spindle which is rotatably mounted in a housing and with which a tool carrier can be rotated into various working positions. In the respective rotational position, the spindle is clamped to a frictional engagement element which is applied to the spindle with non-positive engagement. The frictional engagement permits the spindle to be rotated into the respective rotational position in an infinitely variable fashion. The spindle can be adjusted into the desired rotational position in a reproducible and highly accurate fashion. During the clamping process, the spindle is not loaded in the circumferential direction so that during clamping it cannot be twisted in an undesired fashion.
