A vending machine for products, which works either with cash or without cash, is proposed. For this purpose, a payment card (33) having value units can be introduced into the vending machine (10). The payment card preferably contains an electronic memory (34), in which the value units are stored. An electronic memory and control device (32) contained in the vending machine reads out the value units for the product selected by means of product keys (12) of the vending machine. As a result of the insertion of cash into the vending machine, value units can be credited on the payment card after the actuation of a specific product key (20). As a result of the actuation of another specific product key (21) and the keyboard (24), the vending machine debits value units from the payment card and dispenses a cash amount corresponding to the value units. <IMAGE>
