A method of manufacturing a pile fabric simulating sheepskin, e.g.for a maternity underblanket, comprises preparing a sliver of wool fibres, removing loose fibres from said sliver and chemically treating the sliver to at least partially remove wool scales and reduce subsequent felting, knitting said sliver onto a continuous filament yarn e.g. of polyester, applying to the knitted fabric thus formed a flexible washable air permeable backing e.g. of latex and subjecting the treated fabric to a washing and drying step. Preferably the sliver knitting is effected upon a sliver knitting machine which is capable of selecting the pile fibres in a distinctive and pre-programmed manner or pattern to reduce pile distortion and improve the final appearance of the fabric. |
