PURPOSE:To realize an excellent half tone reproduction in a convenient manner, by controlling emission-nonemission of each fine area independently through on-off control of each electron source corresponding to an input video signal. CONSTITUTION:Electron sources 1 of a solid electron beam generator are disposed in a plane form of three pieces by 3 in number. Electron beams emitted out of each electron source 1 are controlled by a horizontal deflecting means 2 and a vertical deflecting means 3, to scan each picture element 5 on a phosphor screen 4. Each picture element is also divided into fine areas of three by three, and the number of these electron sources 1 and that of these fine areas are equal and their configurations are corresponding to each other. Therefore, on-off control of these electron sources 1 is carried out whereby areal number of emission-nonemission inside the picture element 5 can be selected. When emission areal number of these nine divided fine area is altered, half tones of ten steps can be displayed.
