The device (1) is of the type in which a float (6) is mounted slidably on a tubular guide element (3) fitted at one end (9) into a sleeve (10) extending from a flange (2) which can be fixed to a wall of a tank. The guide element (3) carries a resistor (4) on which slides an electrical contact element (7) fixed to the float (6). The thickness and length of the sleeve (10) are such that in the event of impacts applying high transverse forces on the guide element (3) the sleeve (10) breaks and releases the guide element (3) within the tank without causing any damage to the flange (2) and, consequently, without any escape of fuel. <IMAGE>
