NEW MATERIAL:Monoazo compds. of formula I, wherein R is H, Cl, CH3 or methoxy; R1 is OH or NH2; and R2 is a member selected from the group consisting of CH3, (methoxy or ethoxy)carbonyl, phenyl, etc.; m is 2 or 3; and D is a group of formula II or III, wherein R3 and R4 are each R, ethoxy, nitro, COOH or sulfonamide; and n and p are each 0 or 1. EXAMPLE:A compd. of formula IV. USE:Monoazo compds. which have a high dyeing rate and a high dyeing ratio, dye articles yellow to orange to give dyed products having excellent fastness to water. PREPARATION:1mol of an amino compd. of formula V is diazotized with sodium nitrite in a mineral oil at 5 deg.C or lower. The product is coupled with 1mol of a compd. of formula VI in an aq. medium at 0-50 deg.C and at a pH of 2-9. If desired, the product is treated with a stoichiometric or excessive amount of an inorg. acid to form a water-soluble acid addition salt.
