In a method for improved separation of workpieces by means of a gaseous or liquid cutting jet emerging from a nozzle, the nozzle is given a rapid, limited movement during the cutting process in order to bring other more energy rich or chemically aggressive or mechanically strong abrasive areas of the cutting jet, with respect to its cross-section, into contact with the attack surface of the material to be cut which extends over the thickness of the workpiece without the cutting jet leaving the cutting joint to a substantial degree. <IMAGE>
