<p>PURPOSE:To prevent the cracking and damage of a filter by a method wherein a plurality of filter members consisting of gas permeable ceramics are disposed in an array along the direction of exhaust gas flow. CONSTITUTION:A filter member 2 is provided to collect carbon particles in exhaust gas. The filter member 2 consists of gas permeable ceramics and a plurality of divided members 2a, 2b, 2c are disposed in an array along the direction of gas flow. When carbon particles are collected by the filter member 2, a fuel pump 7, an air pump 10, a burner 5, and a glow plug 11 are operated by means of a differential pressure detector 13 ana a control circuit 14 to burn and clean up carbon particles. Because the filter member consists of divided members, the temperature difference between the upper stream side and the lower stream side of each divided member is small and as a result the cracking and damage of the member is prevented.</p> |
