The known centrifuges with nozzles which are arranged in the thick-matter discharge region and interact with control cams, or the like, attached to the worm body do not permit the system to be controlled independently of its operation and thus do not permit the nozzle openings to be changed so that it is impossible to adapt the discharge of thick matter from the centrifuge to changed operating conditions and/or changed sludge feed concentrations. Also, the nozzles and the control cams which interact with the nozzles are subject to a high degree of wear so that they have to be changed frequently which involves high costs. However, according to the invention all these disadvantages can be very easily eliminated by virtue of the fact that the control elements consist of piston/cylinder units (11) to which pressurised liquid lines (13, 14, 15) which are arranged in the thick-matter discharge-side end wall (5) of the centrifuge drum (1) and lead outwards are connected, the said pressurised liquid lines (13, 14, 15) being fed from the outside with pressurised liquid and each piston rod (10) of the piston/cylinder unit being provided at the outer end with an adjustment element (9) for the openings (8) of the nozzles (7). <IMAGE>
