The stock-taking system of the vending machine incorporates means for defining the specific locations of the various articles. Provision is also made for detecting the presence or absence of an article in its location and for allowing a certain freedom in the shape and volume of an article in relation to a reserved location. Great flexibility is provided for the rapid adaptation of the system to other shapes of articles. Means are provided so that the state of the locations can be ascertained for servicing or invoicing.
