PURPOSE:To reduce the time base distortion of reproduced video signals and to remarkably improve the picture quality of reproduced picture by making the frequency of a reference signal different at every time the head that executes reproduction scanning is changed over and forming servo signals for tracking from the reference signal and reproduced signals for tracking control. CONSTITUTION:Four heads 24a-24d are provided at 90 deg. intervals on a rotary cylinder that makes 3/4 rotation in every 1 field period of video signals. Frequency of reproduced pilot signals is different between tracks formed by different heads on a tape, and frequency of reference pilot signal is made different at every time heads that make reproduction scanning is changed to make reproduced pilot signals at the time of recording scanning and reference pilot signal at the time of reproducing scanning for each head the same frequency, and the tracks are reproduced and scanned by the same head at the time of recording by servo signals formed of reproduced pilot signals and reference pilot signal.
