A fat emulsion for incorporation with straw or similar porous fodder material is made in two stages, in the first of which an unstable emulsion is formed by stirring the fat mixture and skim milk; and in the second stage emulsifying agents are added. These include oxidized polymerized oils and/or mono- or diglycerides and/or lecithin. The fat approximates in composition to butter fat. Examples are given.ALSO:A cattle feed includes as a main constituent a dispersion of fat in a water containing medium, said fat being of chiefly animal origin and having a glyceride composition approximately corresponding to that of butter fat, not over 25 per cent of the dispersed fat being present in particles having a diameter exceeding 30 microns. The emulsions are prepared in two stages; firstly an unstable emulsion results by stirring together the fat mixture and water which is subsequently homogenised in the second stage. In examples, emulsions of the following mixtures are prepared: 1 Bone fat 75 per cent by weight Coconut oil 10 per cent by weight Soya Bean oil 15 per cent by weight 2 Horse fat oil 80 per cent by weight Coconut oil 10 per cent by weight Linseed oil 10 per cent by weight 3 Bone fat 60 per cent by weight Tallow 15 per cent by weight Vegetable oils 15 per cent by weight Palm kernel fat 10 per cent by weight Dispersions of such a type may be absorbed in porous solid foods poor in fat such as hay. |
