PURPOSE:To prevent an idling operation of an outdoor fan and improve a heating capability in case of restarting operation by a method wherein, a forced defrosting operation is carried out when an amount of frost exceeds a reference value and a normal defrosting operation is carried out in response to the amount of frost in case that the frost amount is less than the reference value. CONSTITUTION:An amount of frost for an outdoor heat exchanger 5 is detected by a frost amount sensing means 24 while a first defrosting control means 29 is provided to display a function that if the amount exceeds a first reference value, a heating operation is stopped if the heating operation is being performed and then a defrosting operation is forcibly carried out. A non-operation period of the heating is utilized and in case that an amount of frost is less than a first reference value and exceeds a second reference value, a defrosting operation is carried out and if the amount is less than the second reference value, an outdoor fan 6 is operated and a condition for providing a value more than the third reference value is set as an operating condition for the outdoor fan 6. Therefore, even under no-frosted condition, the fan 6 is not operated in its idling state and an efficient defrosting operation can be carried out and a heating capability in case of restarting operation can be improved.
