PURPOSE:To minimize the decrease in the number of document displaying rows by executing the shifting mode displaying corresponding to a pushing-down key for a part of the displaying picture only during the pushing-down period (prescribed time after pushing-down) of a shift mode key. CONSTITUTION:A data processing device is composed of a keyboard 3 equipped with a character key 6, etc., a text memory 7 to store a document, a mode memory 8, a mode text memory 9, a character generator 10, a CRT display 11, a video RAM 12 and a control part 13. Thus, the control part 13, when a KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KATAKANA (the square form of KANA) key is pushed down, compares a present shifting mode stored in the mode memory 8, and decides whether or not coincident is obtained. When this is dissident, a mode change is executed, this is stored into the mode memory 8 and the character code is written into the mode text memory 9. Only at the time of changing the mode, the mode displaying is displayed at a part of the displaying picture. As the result, all pictures can be used for displaying the document.
