PURPOSE:To optionally set up the radiation quantity of radiant rays at the time of photographing and to always obtain a radiation image excellent in diagnosis performance by setting up the radiation quantity of radiant rays and obtaining a reproduced image having excellent granular characteristics also from an accumulative phosphor sheet on which radiation image information is recorded. CONSTITUTION:The accumulative phosphor sheet 10 is irradiated by exciting light beams 13, 43 and stimulated light beams 15, 45 generated from the sheet 10 are photoelectrically detected to obtain an image signal. The beams 13, 43 are passed through a beam diameter adjusting means 30 to detect the level of radiant energy accumulated in the sheet 10 and the beam diameter of the beams 13, 43 is expanded by a beam diameter control means 30 in accordance with the drop of the energy level. When the beam diameter of these beams 13, 43 is expanded, the sharpness of the image reproduced based on the image signal obtained by the scanning of the beams 13, 43 is dropped. Since the granu larity of the image is deteriorated in accordance with the improvement of the sharpness, the reproduced image can be prevented from the deterioration of granularity by reducing the sharpness.
