PURPOSE:To produce an active metalslab inexpensively by subjecting an electrode to arc melting in vacuum or inert gaseous atmosphere and drawing an ingot while impressing an adequate magnetic field in a vertical direction to a casting mold of specific shape having linings of CaO, etc. CONSTITUTION:The consumable electrode 1 consisting of an active metal such as Ti of Zr is subjected to the arc melting in a melting chamber 2 in which a vacuum or inert gaseous atmosphere is maintained. The molten metal formed in such a manner is accepted into the water-cooled copper mold 3 and the ingot 6 formed in said mold is drawn into a drawing chamber 5. The mold 3 is formed into the rectangular sectional shape rounded at >=10mm at four corners and the inside surface thereof is lined with refractories of CaO-, ZrO2-, TiO2-or Al2O3 base. The magnetic field of 5-75 gauss is vertically impressed into the mold 3 by a stirring coil 4 disosed around the mold 3 to stir the molten metal. The slab having about <=300mm thickness is thereby produced.
