PURPOSE:To make a waste liquid perfectly harmless by removing mercury, by adding a reducing agent and an oxidizing agent to the waste liquid containing a very small amount of mercury before stripping the same with gas. CONSTITUTION:An oxidizing agent such as hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide and a reducing agent such as sodium borohydride or hydroxylamine hydrochloride are added to a waste liquid containing a very small amount of mercury and air is blown into the waste liquid to strip the same. The waste liquid after stripping is neutralized with caustic alkali in the presence of NO3<-> to hold the pH thereof to 6.5-11.5 and, if necessary, the waste liquid is held to 50 deg.C or more to form a spinnel compound which is, in turn, separated. By this method, mercury can be recovered and separated perfectly from the waste liquid.
