PURPOSE:To eliminate an increase of turn-OFF loss on breaking by outputting an OFF-gate pulse after an electric current of GTO element has been damped or has become zero. CONSTITUTION:If a turn-OFF signal is supplied to a GTO element 71 at a certain time, the GTO element 71 will be turned ON. Then, if an ON gate signal is given to a GTO element 73 to which a rectifying current flows, a turn-OFF signal will be supplied to the GTO element 71 immediately after the lapse of a given period of time when an electric current of the GTO 71 is smaller than a holding current. Therefore, the GTO element 71 can be turned OFF without direct breaking of electric current. Other phase GTO elements such as GTO 73 can also be turned ON and OFF in like manner.
