The method is for monitoring and controlling the performance of a rail borne vehicle, in which the latter automatically monitors the speed dependent upon information relative to speed and distance provided by fixed signalling points arranged along its track. The speed data are fed by coded track conduits fitted in the rails themselves. Information received from the rail conduit can increase that which is restrictive and received from earlier signal points. The specific lengths between signalling points along the tracks allow for braking from 120 km/h to stop, or alternatively for speed reduction from 160 km/h to 120 km/h. Since the distance to travel to the next signalling point is transmitted at each point passed, the automatic train control equipment on board the vehicle can calculate the exact point at which the brakes should be applied.
