PURPOSE:To improve operability, by forming a cabinet long lengthways, and with a small bottom area, and providing a subscan pulse generating means which generates a pulse corresponding to subscan speed in the inside of the cabinet, and a photoelectric transducing means which starts read scan by the pulse. CONSTITUTION:Assuming that the width of the cover 10 of a bottom plane is set as (d), and the height of the cover 10, as (h), (h) is set enough larger than (d), and an operator performs the read scan by grasping the side plane D of the cover 10, and moving it in the direction of arrow head A. And since an encoder disk 3 is also rotated at the same speed by the rotation of a manually operated detecting ring 1, and the input light of a photoelectric transducer 5 can be obtained by making continue intermittently the irradiation of a light emitting apparatus 4, and repeated pulses at the speed corresponding to the subscan speed can be obtained at the photoelectric transducer 5. Also, since the start pulse SP of a photoelectric transducer 9 is generated corresponding to the distance of subscan, it is always possible to obtain a regulated level of scanning line density even how the subscan speed changes.
