PURPOSE:To seal the surface of a carrier with good accuracy, by a method wherein a monolithic carrier is immersed in a slurry containing a sealant in a horizontal state so that the cells of the outer peripheral part thereof are contacted with the slurry and rotated in this state. CONSTITUTION:A gamma-alumina powder, an alumina sol, aluminum nitrate and water are kneaded to obtain a slurry 7 which is, in turn, received in a container 8 and the height of a tray 9 is regulated so that a monolithic carrier 1 is immersed by 3mm in the slurry. After the monolithic carrier 1 is immersed, said carrier 1 is rolled on the tray 9 and uniform sealing is applied to the outer peripheral part 4 of the carrier over a width of 3mm and a depth of 3mm to obtain a sealed monolithic carrier 1. Subsequently, the slurry 7 deposited to the outer peripheral part 4 of the monolithic carrier 1 is wiped off before the carrier 1 is dried at 100 deg.C for 60min and baked at 400 deg.C for 60min. |
