PURPOSE:To produce a sliding member having excellent resistance to wear and seizure by providing a thermally sprayed layer essentially consisting of Mo on the surface of a sliding part and a thermally sprayed layer consisting of a specifically composed Mo and Al alloy or Cu alloy stop said layer to a specific thickness. CONSTITUTION:The thermally sprayed layer consisting of 70-100wt% Mo and the balance Al alloy or Cu alloy is provided on the surface of the sliding part of a base material. The thermally sprayed layer consisting of 30-50% Mo and the balance Al alloy or Cu alloy is provided on such sprayed layer to 5-50mum thickness. A hypereutectic Al-Si alloy is preferable for the above- mentioned Al alloy and an aluminum bronze alloy is adequate for the Cu alloy. The thickness of the entire part of the sprayed layers is preferably about >=50mum. The sliding member which has excellent resistance to wear and seizure and has small attacking property against the mating material even under the surface pressure as high as about 5-8kgf/mm<2> is thereby inexpensively obtd.
