PURPOSE:To ease the control over the amount of movement of a cylinder rod in a cylinder device for industrial machinery, by optically detecting the moving position of the cylinder rod in order to control the amount of movement. CONSTITUTION:A floodlighting part is fixed on a cylinder casing 1, while a reflector 11 is fixed to the tip of a cylinder rod 2. Meanwhile, a light receiving part 12, which is provided with a light receiving lens 13 and a semiconductor sensor 14, is fixed to the cylinder casing 1. Based on the incident condition of the reflected light to the light receiving part 12, the distance between a floodlighting part 8 and the reflector 11 is computed. Based on this computation result, the amount of movement of the cylinder rod 2 is controlled by a driving part. With this contrivance, since the amount of movement of the cylinder rod 2 can be detected optically for control, the cylinder rod 2 can be controlled in a stepless manner.
