PURPOSE:To output invariably accurate displacement data regardless of displacement speed by performing position detection with low resolution when the displacement speed is high. CONSTITUTION:When the relative displacement speed of a scale 15 to magnetic sensors 16 and 17 is lower than a reference speed, the signal of the most significant digit bit of the counting result of the counter 24 is counted by a counter 43, and absolute displacement data consisting of the counting result of the counter 24 as low-order digit bits and the counting result of the counter 43 as high-order digit bits is converted into serial data, which is outputted as serial data indicating displacement with high resolution. When the displacement speed exceeds the reference speed, the output signal of the sensor 16 or 17 is waveform-shaped and counted by the counter 43 and the counting result of the counter 24 is disregarded to convert absolute displacement data consisting of the counting result of the counter 43 as its high-order digit bits into serial data, which is outputted as serial data indicating the displacement with low resolution. Consequently, invariably accurate displacement data is outputted regardless of the displacement speed.
