NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H, lower alkyl, halogen or cycloalkyl; R<3> and R<4> are H, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkyl containing R<3> and R<4>). EXAMPLE:3-Isopropyl-3,6,7-trimethyl-5H-imidazo[ 1,2-a ]pyrroline-2-(3H),5-dione shown by formula II. USE:A herbicide. PREPARATION:A maleic anhydride derivative (e.g. 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride shown by formula III is reacted with an alpha-aminocarbonitrile derivative (e.g. alpha-isopropyl-alpha-methyl-alpha-aminocarbonitrile, etc.) shown by formula IV in the presence of a base (e.g. triethylamine, etc.). Then the reaction product is dehydrated to give a dioxo-pyrrolineacetonitrile derivative shown by formula V, then the nitrile group is hydrolyzed, converted into an acid amide group and then the resulting substance is subjected to ring formation through dehydration.
