NEW MATERIAL:A 1,3-dioxol-2-one derivative shown by formula I [R<1> is H or lower alkyl; R<2> is (substituted)phenyl]. EXAMPLE:4-(4-Fluorophenyl)thiomethyl-5-methyl-1,3-dioxol-2-one. USE:A substrate for measuring aryl esterase activity in blood in diagnosis for liver diseases, especially liver cirrhosis. PREPARATION:A compound (e.g. 4-chloromethyl-5-methylo-1,3-dioxol-2-one, etc.) shown by formula II (X is halogen) is reacted with a compound (e.g. 4- fluorothiophenol, etc.) shown by the formula R<2>SH in a nonpolar solvent such as dichloromethane, etc., preferably in the presence of a base such as triethylamine, etc., usually at 0-40 deg.C for 10min-4hr.
