PURPOSE:To obtain in high yield a polymer useful as a functional polymer which can be used for recovering metal such as silver, by copolymerizing a styrene derivative monomer having an ethynyl group in the meta position with a specified vinyl monomer. CONSTITUTION:A linear polymer of an MW of 1,000-100,000, comprising structural units of formulas III and II, is produced by copolymerizing monomers of formulas I and II together. In the formulas, R is H, 1-10C alkyl or the like and X and Y are each H, 1-10C hydrocarbon group, 1-10C halohydrocarbon group, halocyano, hydroxyl, COOR1 (wherein R1 is H or 1-10C hydrocarbon group) or COR2 (wherein R2 is 1-10C hydrocarbon group) or the like. The reaction temperature is preferably about 20-90 deg.C. The reaction time depends upon a temperature, a catalyst, etc., because the reaction rate varies with them, so that it is desirable to determine the time when the reaction must be terminated by tracing the residual monomer content by means of, for example, gas chromatography.
